12. Joseph Mulanax was born about 1795 in Va; died on 12 Apr 1864 in Greene Co., Mo; was buried in Wittenburg Sch'l, House Cemetery, Greene Co., Mo. Notes:
From THE ROSEMARY PICKETT PAPERS. Primary source is "Mulanax-Bales" by
Katherine and Alvin Mulanax, April, 1980. Book sources are various census of
1820, 1830 and 1850 and Greene Co., MO census of 1860. Also widow's pension
application of 2nd wife. Four correspondents who are also descendants are
listed. Joseph's occupation is listed as farmer, carpenter and miller.
War of 1812, Pvt., Infantry, 5th Rgt., Virginia Militia.
From "Mulanax and Bales" by Katherine and Alvin Mulanax, April, 1980, Joseph
and his families were part of the great migration westward to make homes in the
wilderness. From Virginia he pioneered in Clark Co., Ohio, then in Madison
Co., Indiana, and finally in Greene Co., Missouri where he lived until he died
in 1864 at the age of 69. Katherine and Alvin indicate Mullenax is French and
there is a town in France by the same name. The French spelling is Molyneux.
The last year that Joseph appears in Virginia is from the tax list of Pendleton
County in 1816. From Virginia he went to Clark County, Ohio where he married
Catherine Arbogast, who had migrated to Ohio with her family some years before.
Joseph first appears as head of a family in the 1820 census of Pleasant
Twp., Clark Co. and appears there again in the 1830 census. Sometime after
1830, Joseph, his family and relatives migrated to Madison Co., Indiana. David
Arbogast, Catherine's uncle, also migrated to Madison Co., IN about this same
time. On 13 Jun 1833, records show Joseph purchased land near Anderson,
Madison Co. The land was close to Moss Island in the White River just west of
Anderson. In 1836 Joseph built the Moss Island Mill and operated as a miller
for many years. The Mills were consumed by fire in 1873. Joseph is not on the
1840 census and is thought to be enroute to Greene Co., Missouri at the time.
