Brown McLaurin, also known as B.M. was local manager for Pocahontas
Development Co., a surveyor and commissioner of school lands. The family lived
in Marlinton, Pocahontas Co.

Announcement of a Silver Wedding Anniversary Reception at the couple's home on
Saturday evening December, 12, 1896 at Marlinton, WV.

Ref: WBH; dates on this family from his Bible that daughters Daisy, then Brownie
had. Died in Pulaski VA, at home of daughter Brownie; death recorded in
Pocahontas also. (FYD: I have noticed several duplications of vital statistics
in Pocahontas records. I believe that people brought them in to be recorded in
the home county, even when the event occurred elsewhere.)
He went to school at McDowell, VA to William R. McNeer, a Methodist
minister. Later he taught at Top of Allegheny and Glade Hill.
Moved to Marlinton and bought the Andrew McLaughlin home when Andrew moved
to Maxwellton.

Brown married Harriet Elizabeth Arbogast on 12 Dec 1871 in , Pocahontas , West Virginia, United States. Harriet was born on 9 Mar 1848 in , , Randolph Co., Va/Wv; died on 23 Jul 1917 in , Pocahontas , West Virginia, United States; was buried in Mt. View Cem, Marlinton, Pocahontas Co., Wv. Ref: WBH, granddaughter. When John died, soldiers were camped at the Methodist
Church at Bartow. The family meant to remove him after the war to the church
cemetery, but this had not been done when Margaret died in 1865, and she was
laid to rest beside him.
One of the Civil War battles was fought on their homeplace; Will and Henry
carried their mother to 52nd VA Regiment camp, which was principally from
Augusta, as she was ill. She remained there during the night.
John was an extensive landowner, owning thousands of acres of land on both
sides of the road for a distance of 10 miles. He was also a surveyor and
helped survey the Staunton-Petersburg Turnpike on the Allegheny Mountain and
Traveler's Repose section, under Claude Crozet, an engineer of Napoleon's. He
was deputy surveyor for the county under Sampson Mathews, first surveyor of
Pocahontas Co. Roscoe W. Brown, surveyor in 1938, told WBH that he had always
found the work of John Yeager to be very accurate.

John married Margaret (Peggy) Arbogast on 1 Nov 1837 in Pocahontas Co., Va. Margaret (daughter of Benjamin Arbogast and Frances Mullens) was born on 29 Feb 1820 in Pocahontas Co., Va; died on 11 May 1865 in Top of Allegheny, Pendleton Co., Wv; was buried in Homeplace, Top Allegheny, Pocahontas Co., Wv. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
