Daisy Arbogast Hartmann Papers include reference to page 539, The History of
Appanoose Co., IA, 1878, regarding himself, family and prominence in Bellair
Township. Also refers to his overland trip by oxen and wagon in 1853 to
California and his return after 2-3 years via New York. Papers also include a
transcript of an article in the semi-weekly IOWEGIAN, Centerville, IA, June 23,
1911, describing his trip overland along the Mormon Trail to Salt Lake City,
UT. The wagontrain made up south of Centerville leaving on Apr. 4, 1853
consisting of 24 wagons and horses and oxen and some loose property, including
cows. Names of several families who made the journey are included. Michael
drove a wagon with four yoke of oxen and with a long whip drove the team most
of the way to Salt Lake City along the Mormon Trail.

1880 census Bellair Twp., Appanoose Co., Iowa, age 52, born VA listed with
wife Mary Ann born VA, age 52, and 7 children.

Michael married Mary Ann Pierce on 14 Oct 1847 in Pendleton, Virginia, United States. Mary was born on 29 Jul 1827 in Franklin, Marshall, West Virginia, USA; died on 5 Mar 1909 in Numa, Appanoose, Iowa, USA; was buried in Old Livingood Cm, Numa, Ia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Howell on year of birth of Mary Ann, marriage bond dated 9 Oct 1847, 1850
census for North Fork Hills, Pendleton Co. and 1860 census for Mouth of Seneca,
Pendleton Co.

1850 census includes Michael, Mary Ann, Frances and Emily. Also in household
is Edith Ketterman Arbogast age 50, Michael's mother, Isaac Hinkle age 68,
Christina Waybright age 8, and Amos C. Waybright age 6.

1860 census includes only Edith Ketterman Arbogast age 65, Michael Henkle age
85, Christina Waybright age 17, Cain Helmick age 27, and Jason Harper age 37.

From the data above and notes under Michael it would appear that Michael and
Mary Ann went to Iowa shortly after the 1850 census. Michael drove the oxe and
wagon west from Iowa in 1853. Since his mother Edith Ketterman Arbogast was
still in Pendleton Co. in 1860, it appears she joined her sons family in Iowa
after 1860.
