Family homestead and cemetery is on Big Sycamore Creek about 5 miles from its
confluence with the Elk River, near Indore, Pleasant Twp., Clay Co., WV. County
road # 12 traverses Big Sycamore Creek many times from Indore down to the Elk
River, then down the Elk along the old B&O railroad track, past the old train
station to Little Sycamore Creek, then up Little Sycamore Creek past Warfield to
County Road # 1 near Indore. Eldorado is at the mouth of Big Sycamore Creek.

County Road # 12-1 runs from Warfield to near the Homestead on County
Road # 12, completing the circle of roads # 12 and # 12-1. Supplies were
shipped from Charleston up the Elk River on the B&O railroad to the train
station and then by wagon up road # 12 to the homestead. Some supplies were
purchased at Warfield, the nearest settlement, and at Indore, a larger
settlement but somewhat further away. The road to Indore was better than the
road to Warfield. Information from uncle Joseph Monroe Arbogast by
conversation and letters. The roads through this area are not improved. Many
are now only logging, gas pipeline and other utitity maintenance roads.

  1. 8.  George Washington Arbogast was born about 1820 in Pendleton Co., Va/Wv (son of Michael Arbogast and Edith Ketterman); died after 1880 in Clay Co., Wv; was buried in Family Cem., Clay Co., Wv.

    Notes:

Clay and Pendleton Co. marriage, birth and death records.

    Pendleton Co. census, 1820, 30, 40, 50 and 60.

Clay Co. census, 1860, 70 and 80. 1860 census of household included Geo. W.
Hedrick, age 21, born in VA, laborer and Martha Holcomb, age 16, born in VA,
    hireling. Enumerated under Pleasant Twp.

All of this research by Amanda Arbogast Forbes.

Following the death of his father, George and his brother Nichodemus
apparently followed the headwaters of the Elk River down into Nicholas Co.,
VA/WV or Braxton Co., VA/WV (now Clay Co.) to the Beechy and Sycamore Creeks
area. Nichodemus settled the Beechy Creek area, George the adjacent Sycamore
Creek area sometime during the period 1842-1847.

    DEATH: Living, 1880 census.

In 1860 valued real property at $500 & personal property at $385; in 1870,
$1000 and $423. Substantial estate considering post-war economic conditions.

Pendleton Co., VA marriage bond dated 5 Mar 1842, signed by Geo. Arbogast and
Levi Reed, consent of father, Washington Reed and mother Edy Arbogast.
    Witness, Esau Ketterman.

George married Mary Reed on 17 Mar 1842 in Pendleton Co., Va/Wv. Mary was born about 1825 in Pendleton Co., Va/Wv; died in in Clay Co., Wv. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Mary Reed was born about 1825 in Pendleton Co., Va/Wv; died in in Clay Co., Wv.

    Notes:

1873 Death Records of Clay Co. and research by Amanda Crawford Arbogast Forbes
record the tradegy which visited this family, when three of their children,
Christina, Ferdinand and Levi died of fever along with their 16 year old
daughter in law, Martha Schoonover, wife of Geo. Wash., Jr.

Census of 1860 indicates an infant, Lemuel Arbogast, living with this family.
Clay Co. birth records indicate a son, Lemuel, born to Nichodemus and Mary
Arbogast on 1 May 1859 or 1960. The birth records seem conclusive. This
Nichodemus is a brother to Geo. Wash. and lived nearby. The census taker may
have listed the child with the wrong family or the Geo. Wash. family could have
been caring for this infant. See Nichodemus and Mary Simmons Arbogast family
    group records.

Above information on this famiy from Amanda Arbogast Forbes records.

From "Our Family, The Colaws of Virginia and Points West" by Shirley Jeanee
(Colaw) Howell of Sumter, SC notes that marriage declaration was dated 5 Mar
1842, signed by George Arbogast and Levi Reed with consent of father,
Washington Reed, and Edith for her son, George. Witness Esau Ketterman.
