    Notes:

    Information from a family bible kept by her father or another member of the
    family. Marriage recorded Alleghany Co., MD. Found on 1850 Census of Highland
    Co., VA. The Grays moved to Oldtown, Mc Lean Co., IL in the fall of 1855. In
    1859 they moved to Lexington, IL. A biography of Dr. Gray was published in
    1879 in, History of Mc Lean County, Illinois, by Wm. Le Baron. Book in
    possession of the Lexington, IL Genealogical Society. According to the book
    Jane Caroline had 7 children with 5 living in 1879. Two must have died young.
    The five children are listed with the spouse of the first three along with
    several dates as shown. Dr. Gray married again following Jane's death. This
    marriage is recorded. The second wife was a widow.

    Emanuel or his children now in possession of Larry Roberts at Hannibal, MO.
    Data confirmed by 1850 Highland Co., VA Census, by Matheny, pp. 58 and 59.;
    Marriages of Pendleton Co., VA 1788-1853, by Mary Harter, p. 2 and History of
    Highland Co., VA, by Morton. Emanuel also named in deed of heirs of George
    Arbogast, his father, Pendleton Co., Deed Book 14, pp. 173 and 174, 1844.

    Other recorded events indicate Emanuel was one of the first justices of
    Highland Co. when it was formed in 1847. Appointed school commissioner in
    1853. Appraised his brother, Daniel Arbogast's estate in 1845. He was
    influential in organizing the Methodist Church at Dry Run on land given earlier
    by the descendants of his grandfather, Michael. In 1847 Emanuel freed his
    slaves including Sam, who belonged to his father-in-law, Isaac Gum; see Deed
    Book 1, p. 37, Highland Co., VA. Emanuel and Isabella deed land to trustees of
    M.E. Church, Deed Book 2, p. 104, 23 Jun 1853, Highland Co., VA. Emanuel and
    Isabella deed land to Ben Ami Hansel, 32ac, Deed Book 2, p. 388, 6 Aug 1855,
    Highland Co., VA. Emanuel, Isabella and some of his children went to Illinois
    in late 1855 or 1856.

    Emanuel married Jane Gum on 26 Dec 1826 in Pendleton Co., Va. Jane was born on 11 Jun 1805 in Crabbottom Sect., Pendleton Co., Va; died on 22 May 1837 in Crabbottom Sect., Pendleton Co., Va. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    425-429. Jane is the daughter of Isaac. Isaac Gum is the son of John Gum,
    grandson of John Gum and great grandson of Roger Gum of Delaware. Roger Gum
    ( -1796) is the first recorded Gum in America. Jane's mother is Jane (or
    June) Erwin (Ervin, Ervine), second wife of Isaac Gum. His first wife was
    Martha Jane Mc Bride in Rockingham Co., VA, in 1779. Isaac married Jane Erwin
    on 24 Nov 1796, in Bath Co., VA. Jane (Gum) Arbogast is named in her father's
    will, which was proved on 7 Apr 1830, Pendleton Co., VA, Will Book IV, p. 129.
    Jane (Gum) Arbogast is a sister to John Ervin, Charles and Isaac Gum, Jr.
    There were also children from Isaac's first marriage to Martha Jane Mc Bride.
    They are, Mary Gum, who married Jacob Sybert; Jacob; Abraham, who married
    Elizabeth Sybert; and Mc Bride Gum, who died before his father leaving minor
    children.

    5. Norval Wilson Arbogast was born on 8 May 1837 in Pendleton Co., Va/Wv, Crabbottom Sect.; died in 1930 in McLean Co., Il; was buried in Kampf Cem., Mt. Hope, McLean Co., Il.

    Married once, remained in the community where his father settled near the
    village of Crabbottom, Pendleton Co., VA/WV, now Blue Grass, Highland Co., VA.
    His place probably abutted the lands of his father and brother, Michael. It
    may be possible that he lived 2-3 miles from his fathers home, on Franks Run.
    His son, Daniel, lived at this location. Carl Arbogast, son of Abraham
    Arbogast lived there in 1971, per Amanda Forbes. Had 9 children.

    Deed of heirs filed in Pendleton Co., 1844 gives names of children. Died
    intestate. His dates are from a family bible in possession of Larry Roberts.
    Bible was kept by Emanuel or some of his family who went to Illinois.

    It is possible Catherine was born in Pennsylvania before her parents came to
