    John was a farmer. He served three years during the Civil War, was wounded in
    the leg by a bullet. His only brother, Joel, was killed in the War. The
    family cemetery has a monument erected with all the names listed thereon of
    those buried there, including Solomon, his wife, and John and his wife.
