    Data confirmed by 1850 Highland Co., VA Census, by Matheny, pp. 58 and 59.;
    Marriages of Pendleton Co., VA 1788-1853, by Mary Harter, p. 2 and History of
    Highland Co., VA, by Morton. Emanuel also named in deed of heirs of George
    Arbogast, his father, Pendleton Co., Deed Book 14, pp. 173 and 174, 1844.

    Other recorded events indicate Emanuel was one of the first justices of
    Highland Co. when it was formed in 1847. Appointed school commissioner in
    1853. Appraised his brother, Daniel Arbogast's estate in 1845. He was
    influential in organizing the Methodist Church at Dry Run on land given earlier
    by the descendants of his grandfather, Michael. In 1847 Emanuel freed his
    slaves including Sam, who belonged to his father-in-law, Isaac Gum; see Deed
    Book 1, p. 37, Highland Co., VA. Emanuel and Isabella deed land to trustees of
    M.E. Church, Deed Book 2, p. 104, 23 Jun 1853, Highland Co., VA. Emanuel and
    Isabella deed land to Ben Ami Hansel, 32ac, Deed Book 2, p. 388, 6 Aug 1855,
    Highland Co., VA. Emanuel, Isabella and some of his children went to Illinois
    in late 1855 or 1856.

    Emanuel married Jane Gum on 26 Dec 1826 in Pendleton Co., Va. Jane was born on 11 Jun 1805 in Crabbottom Sect., Pendleton Co., Va; died on 22 May 1837 in Crabbottom Sect., Pendleton Co., Va. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    425-429. Jane is the daughter of Isaac. Isaac Gum is the son of John Gum,
    grandson of John Gum and great grandson of Roger Gum of Delaware. Roger Gum
    ( -1796) is the first recorded Gum in America. Jane's mother is Jane (or
    June) Erwin (Ervin, Ervine), second wife of Isaac Gum. His first wife was
    Martha Jane Mc Bride in Rockingham Co., VA, in 1779. Isaac married Jane Erwin
    on 24 Nov 1796, in Bath Co., VA. Jane (Gum) Arbogast is named in her father's
    will, which was proved on 7 Apr 1830, Pendleton Co., VA, Will Book IV, p. 129.
    Jane (Gum) Arbogast is a sister to John Ervin, Charles and Isaac Gum, Jr.
    There were also children from Isaac's first marriage to Martha Jane Mc Bride.
    They are, Mary Gum, who married Jacob Sybert; Jacob; Abraham, who married
    Elizabeth Sybert; and Mc Bride Gum, who died before his father leaving minor
    children.
