  • Notes
    • From family records of Merle Arbogast Chorba of New Vernon, New Jersey,
daughter of Dr. Hoyt Bailey Arbogast.

From Doris (Snyder) Beverage, Clarissa had her right arm crushed in a cider
mill when young. She was given up for dead by a physician from an adjoining
county. Capt. John McElwee amputated the arm with a razor and and joint saw.
She recovered fully and raised her children. Their old log house was located
on the same foundation as the present Arbogast house, which was purchased by
the National Radio Observatory in 1957. They are buried near the spot where
the Old Log Chucrch used to be, known as the Deer Creek Union Meeting House.
Adam owned many acres of land which was divided among his children. The home
place was handed down to Christopher, then to O. Glenn. The last tract of
land, 6A, along Hospital Run, was sold to descendants, Nola and Adolphus Shears
in January 1962. Doris also sent copy of letter from their daughter, Dorynda
      C. Arbogast from Webster, addressed to Mrs. Margaret C. Arbogast, Buckhannon,
Upshur Co., WV, in 1864, where they located during the war. The letter is in
the possession of O. G. Arbogast, Arbovale, WV. Doris also sent a copy of a
letter from Dorynda C. Shears from Buckhannon 19 Sep 1865 to Mrs. Margaret C.
Arbogast, Green Bank, Pocahontas Co., WV.

D/o Mary M. Sutton and granddaughter of John and Rachel (Gillespie) Sutton.
