Groom, age 17, born Pocahontas Co., VA, son of Solomon and Catharine (Wilfong) Varner. Source of additional information is, The Family of John P. and Dianah (Nottingham) Varner, by William C. Varner of Churchville, VA, copy in file. John was a farmer. He served three years during the Civil War, was wounded in the leg by a bullet. His only brother, Joel, was killed in the War. The family cemetery has a monument erected with all the names listed thereon of those buried there, including Solomon, his wife, and John and his wife.
