    IL, near Bloomfield. He attended school until age 18 and studied one winter in
    the High School. Subsequently he was a student at Antioch College, Yellow
    Springs, OH, for a year. He enlisted 1 Aug 1862 in D Co., 79th IL. Infantry,
    musterin in as a Sergeant. He was the only member of his regiment to
    participate in every battle in which it was engaged, 17 in all, some of which
    were major battles. Mustered out as an Orderly Sergeant on 24 Jun 1865 at
    Springfield, IL. Aleck was a very successful farmer and cattleman.
