  Amanda was born on "the Thorn" a section near Doe Hill and today in Pendleton Co., WV. When she was about 16 or 17 her parents moved to Crabbottom, Highland Co., VA where her father built a lovely colonial home that is still standing. In 1857 her father sent her to school in Windsor, CT hoping to break off her romance with John W. Arbogast but she returned and eloped with him, marrying on 4 Aug 1958 at Cumberland, MD.
