Beard Harper.

Ref: WBH, granddaughter. When John died, soldiers were camped at the Methodist
Church at Bartow. The family meant to remove him after the war to the church
cemetery, but this had not been done when Margaret died in 1865, and she was
laid to rest beside him.
One of the Civil War battles was fought on their homeplace; Will and Henry
carried their mother to 52nd VA Regiment camp, which was principally from
Augusta, as she was ill. She remained there during the night.
John was an extensive landowner, owning thousands of acres of land on both
sides of the road for a distance of 10 miles. He was also a surveyor and
helped survey the Staunton-Petersburg Turnpike on the Allegheny Mountain and
Traveler's Repose section, under Claude Crozet, an engineer of Napoleon's. He
was deputy surveyor for the county under Sampson Mathews, first surveyor of
Pocahontas Co. Roscoe W. Brown, surveyor in 1938, told WBH that he had always
found the work of John Yeager to be very accurate.

Ref: Jim and Rita Wooddell records, January 1994, indicate that a deed in 1872
shows that Margaret, Joel, and Brazilla Adolphus were living in Kansas.

A reprint (Pocahontas Times in 1932) of a letter from Margaret was in the
scrapbook of WBH's Aunt Eliza. Dated 22 August 1864, it was written in
Jeffersonville, OH and was very concerned with war news from home. Margaret
described Ohio in glowing terms and said that the boys liked it there. She
said that they would probably stay there until the war was over and then go
further west.
