  Per Mildred Johnston, Robt. is the son of Adam Starks and Hannah (Shaffer) Starks who was born in Germany. Adam served in the Civil War and is believed to be buried by the railroad grade in Bartow, WV. As a young man, Robert travelled to Missouri and back in a covered wagon with his parents. Mary and Robert lived on Elk Mt. until 1917, at Phillipi, WV, 1917-1919, then moved to a log cabin in Winterburn. In 1922 they bought 44 ac. in Thornwood from Roy Houchin, cleared the land and built a house from an older house of Joe King. Robt. worked for H. M. Hickman and Walter Gutshall as a sawyer. Robt. was also a blacksmith with his shop at home in Thornwood. In 1931 Robt. married and had a second family with Carrie Slayton Vandevander. Adam b.1829. Hannah b.1832 Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany.
