DEATH: Coroner's jury verdict that death was by a gunshot wound at the hands
of a guard summoned to arrest him on a warrant. He had been previously indicted
for a felony. A posse had been formed to arrest him and several other men who
had also been indicted. The posse surrounded the gang on the Waugh place at
Waugh mountain. The gang, of which Cump was a member, refused to surrender and
started shooting. In the exchange of gunfire Cump was killed and the others
arrested. The Waugh place is on Big Sycamore Creek in Clay Co., WV.
