  From "Mulanax - Bales Family History" by Alvin and Katherine Mulanax, April 1980, p. 93, James served as a Private in the Second Batallion of Augusta Militia in 1779. Also marriage to Mary Arbogast performed by John Rodgers. This book also records the year of death and place of burial. Sources indicated are "History of Highland County, Virginia" by Oren F. Morton and marriage records of Pendleton Co., VA/ WV. Marriage to Mary Yeager by Samuel Shannon. The Jane Barnes Papers indicate year of death as 1814 since there was a public auction of his property on 6 Sep 1814. Jane also lists two land warrants for military service as Warrant # 12442, 2 Apr 1792, 10 ac on Crabbottom and # 1814, 3 Jul 1794, 85 ac on Crabbottom. Jane also confirms data from others but indicates James was born in 1761 or 1762.
