In 1863 a building collapsed on him and he was never able to work thereafter. There is no record of his ever marrying. Shortly after his death there were rumors that he died from foul play according to news article in the Springfield Republic newspaper on 31 Mar 1877 and 2 Apr 1877. A coroners inquest ruled he died from natural causes. He died intestate and on 27 Apr 1877, A. W. Mumper, John W. Baldwin and Charles Hause (his brother-in-law) were appointed administrators of his estate. Arbogast of Arrowsmith, IL, to Amanda Arbogast Forbes in 1940, tells of Susan and John's living in Conway Springs, KS, participating in the Oklahoma land opening and getting their 160 ac. on the Cottonwood River just across from Guthrie, OK. They lived there for several years in a sod house, later a frame house, then moved back to Farmer City, IL, in 1895 where John died a few years later. She and John had an adopted son. The article mentions Susan later married G. F. Mc Bride, whom she survived. It concludes with her plans of going with her brother, John Muir, to visit with relatives in Oregon and California, and they will also stop in Guthrie, OK, where she will call on friends. John enlisted in 1861, G Co., 37th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He saw service in Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana and Texas. Discharged at Chicago, IL, 4 Oct 1864. He was School Director for 6 years, Collector for one tern, and was School Trustee in 1879. He was also Constable of the Township for 4 years. Cemetery record extract gives month of birth as October. 1880 census, Arrowsmith Twp., McLean Co., IL, age 36, wife Catherine age 32 b. KY, dau. Mary E. age 12 b. IL, son, Wm. H. age 10 b. IL, dau. Annie B. age 6 b. IL, dau. Sarah E. age 3 b. IL, and one not reported. |
