Date of birth is from a tombstone and obituary which correspond with census
records, but family bible indicates 1837. However, on all census records he is
listed as two years older than his wife. John W. was Sheriff of Highland Co.
from 1879 to 1890. He was a bugler in the Civil War, A Co., 14th VA Cav., CSA.

Records for determining birth vary considerably. 1850 census of Highland Co.,
VA indicate age as 61; 1860 census, age 83 and obviously incorrect; age was
indicated as 66 on his death record. The 1850 census age is used.

Death record filed in Highland Co., VA indicates 30 Jul 1861. Will filed in
Highland Co., VA, Will Book 2, p.30, dated 19 Sep 1859 and probated Sept. 1861.

Marriage recorded in Pendleton Co., VA/WV.

From his will it is most probable that Jonathan did not have any children.
Beneficiaries named were Cain and Phoebe Wimer, and Wm. Baker. At the time of
his will his place of residence was at the mouth of Strait Creek.

Jonathan named in will of father, John Arbogast, and on the deed of heirs in

DEATH: Not located after 1880 census. While his age agrees, his wife was
listed as Ella, different name from Phoebe whom he married in 1872. It is
entirely possible that his first wife died as she was only 14 when married.

of Larry Roberts in file. Assumption of State of birth by compiler. The first
entry in the Bible of this birth was listed as Joe John 7 May 1890. This year
of birth was later crossed out and 1900 (or so it appears) is inserted. The
original entry also indicates Joe John as the youngest son. A subsequent and
apparent correcting entry indicates name as Joseph and year of birth as 1900.
The original year of birth shown as 1890 is obviously in error since another
son, Howard, born 19 Feb 1890, would have been born about three months prior.
Due to these factors the compiler has retained the name as Joseph and the birth
at 7 May 1900 since the later Bible entry is persuasive. 		 arbo

In third retirement and almost 86 years old at this writing, Uncle Mon is a
first rate gardener on a large scale and an avid coon hunter with the "best
hunting dogs in West Virginia". A friend goes with him at night or he hunts
with his 4 wheel drive along back roads at night. "Road hunting", he calls it.
"The dogs won't hunt wide enough at night when I road hunt".
