572 | Birth: 1836 Brunswick County Virginia, USA Death: 1881 C.S.A. - Confederate States Army Company B(3rd), 59th Virginia Infantry Private in & out of service Sydnor Daniel (son of Peter Daniel (born about 1788, died 14 Oct. 1864) and Martha Elizabeth Parker (born 1800, died 1855)) was born about 1836 in St. Andrew Parish, Brunswick County, Virginia. Sydnor enlisted in the Confederate Army at Chaffin's Farm for three years on 1 July 1862. Sydnor became a member of the "Brunswick Blues" Company B(3), 59th Virginia Infantry, C.S.A. and served through the remainder of the war. His tour of duty took him into South Carolina and Florida and then back to Petersburg where he took part in the fighting there. Sydnor was shown in the service records in hospitals several times and was seriously wounded on some occasion during the war, but the service records fail to prove where this wound occured. It appears that he was wounded near Petersburg during 1864 as he was reported in the hospital in Richmond and in the Confederate Hosital in Farmville, Virginia. Sydnor was granted a thirty day leave on October 14th, so he was likely at home when his father was buried. Sydnor was back with his company when Gen. Lee ordered the retreat from Richmond on 2 April 1865 and escaped capture at Sayler's Creek. He surrendered with Gen. Lee at Appomattox Court House on 4 April 1865. Sydnor's old war wound continued to bother him and he died. Sydnor died about 1881 at age 45 when his son Peter was just a boy. Sydnor's wife, Elizabeth lived on for 25 years after his death and applied for a Civil War widow's pension on 28 April 1904. This application states that Sydnor died of dropsy in 1881, however, this was, no doubt, related to his old war wound. Children from this marriage were: 1) Matilda Elizabeth Daniel (born 31 January 1856, died 6 June 1916) Matilda married Joseph Sonk Crowder (died 3 June 1944) at Macedonia Methodist Church in Brunswick County, Virginia on 10 May 1882. 2) Benjamin Franklin Daniel was born on 15 February 1858 and died on 6 July 1908. He never married. 3) David Sydnor Daniel (born 21 June 1868, died 19 January 1919) married Ida Beale Reams (died 15 August 1952) in Nottoway County, Virginia on 18 December 1895. 4) Peter Pelham "Pelly" Daniel (born 1 June 1871, died 19 September 1923) married Cora Louise Pritchett on 18 January 1898. 5) Luther Pryor Daniel (born 20 May 1874, died 26 September 1928) married Susan Virginia "Virgie" Daniel (born 13 November 1878, died 29 December 1947) in Brunswick County, Virginia on 27 March 1901. 6) Algernon Cephas "Algie" Daniel (6 May 1879, died 13 December 1935) married Mary Nina Inge (died 16 Sept 1958) in Lunenburg County, Virginia on 30 March 1904. 576 | BIRTH: Estimated from Pendleton Co., VA/WV census of 1860 and 70. Not found on 1880 census. MARRIAGE: Records of John Arbogast, a nephew and son of Elijah J. Arbogast, lists Mary Jane as marrying Mathew Helmick which corresponds with Pendleton Co. Marriage Record for a M.J. Arbogast, age 33, who married Helmick, age 27 in 1883. On 1880 Census under Joseph and Prudence Arbogast family was a grandchild, Harness Teter, age 7. It appears that a daughter of this family married a Teter. Mary Jane, daughter, was listed on 1870 census but not on 1880 census, which suggests that she may have been the mother of Harness Teter but no marriage to a Teter can be located. Child could belong to another daughter of Joseph and Prudence Arbogast. Glenn Huffman research, Mary had 5 children, 4 living in 1900; 5, 3 living in 1910. Daughter, Tallahassee, b. 1884, with them in 1900; granddaughter, Verna May, age 13, and Mary's father with them in 1910. | Arbogast, Mary Jane (P16575)
